If you desire a perfectly manicured lawn all year round, without spending any time to maintain it, then artificial grass installation is the ideal solution for you! Although the initial cost of synthetic turf installation is higher, it saves you time and eliminates ongoing expenses such as watering, fertilizing, or mowing, which are commonly associated with natural lawns. In the long run, it can even pay for itself, especially if you choose from a range of instant lawn varieties.

At Designer Paving and Landscaping, we provide top-quality synthetic turfs at competitive prices, perfect for your artificial grass installation needs. Our artificial grass is produced using advanced multi yarn technologies, featuring straight dark green and light green yarn, alongside curly dark brown and light brown yarn (thatch) to achieve a thicker, more realistic appearance.
When choosing from our instant lawn varieties, consider these three main factors essential for your synthetic turf installation:
Pile height
- Short 10-30mm: Best suited for putting greens and commercial areas with heavy traffic use.
- Medium 30-40mm: Ideal for residential backyards with moderate to heavy traffic.
- Long 40-50mm: Offers the most realistic look for areas with light traffic.
Stitch rate
The stitch rate indicates the number of yarn stitches used per square meter of synthetic turf. A higher stitch rate results in a denser lawn, with typical values for residential synthetic turfs ranging from 12,000 to 18,000 stitches.
DTEX
DTEX (Decitex) measures the linear mass of yarn in decigrams per 10,000 meters. A higher DTEX number indicates thicker fiber mass, with most residential synthetic turfs falling between 10,000 and 12,000 DTEX—a good indicator of the turf's durability.

Correct excavation depth is crucial for a high-quality artificial grass installation. We calculate our base depth based on a 10mm pile height above pathways. To achieve a minimum 50mm base, we need to excavate 80mm below pathway height when using 40mm synthetic turf.
For base preparation, we prefer using Dolomite sand as it's permeable, compacts well, and is free of stones that can impact pinning.
Screed bars and straps are utilized to create a perfectly leveled area before thorough compaction.
All our synthetic turf installations are meticulously cut and joined, held securely in place with deep heavy-duty galvanized U pins.
We then add fine sand infill to the artificial lawn, approximately 5kg to 10kg per m2. This sand not only adds weight, stability, volume, and protection but is also essential for the grooming process.
Lastly, we groom the artificial lawn using either a standard or power broom, which brushes the yarn upright while the infill sand locks it in place, ensuring a perfect finish for our instant lawn varieties.

For some people, there's nothing like the smell of freshly cut grass and the sound of a sprinkler running in the background.
Although natural lawns do require more time and maintenance, they have distinct advantages. They're cooler, self-repairing, pet-friendly, and look great when properly cared for. In contrast, artificial grass installation offers a low-maintenance alternative that appeals to many homeowners.
Unlike the thirsty and invasive lawns of yesteryear, today’s new lawn varieties are bred to be drought-tolerant, featuring less invasive stolons (runners) and rhizoids.
When considering different instant lawn varieties for your yard, it's essential to evaluate several key factors: the amount of sun or shade your lawn will receive, how much traffic the lawn will endure, and the wear and tear from pets and kids.
With this in mind, let's explore the pros and cons of the three most common instant lawn varieties, keeping in mind that synthetic turf installation may be a suitable option for some homeowners in Adelaide.

Couch Grass
Bermuda and Santa Ana are the two most commonly installed couch grasses, often preferred in synthetic turf installations. This fine-leaved grass thrives in full sun and warmer weather, making it a great choice for an instant lawn variety. It is drought tolerant and self-repairs during summer, providing moderate growth speed. Additionally, it’s a pleasure to walk on with bare feet. However, couch grass dislikes the colder months, leading to dormant growth and a loss of color, and it is not the most durable option for large pets or high-traffic areas.
Buffalo Grass
In Adelaide, Sir Walter and Sapphire stand out as the top varieties of Buffalo grass installations. This large-leaved grass maintains a dark green color throughout the year and is the most shade tolerant of the three varieties. However, it is the least drought tolerant and while more durable than couch, it’s not as durable as Kikuyu. Buffalo grass is also the slowest growing and repairing grass, which can affect its appeal in instant lawn varieties.
Kikuyu Grass
Eureka and Village Green are both male sterile dwarf varieties of Kikuyu grass and are popular choices for synthetic turf installation. Featuring medium-sized leaves with a lighter shade of green than Buffalo, Kikuyu is the fastest growing and self-repairing grass available. It is the most durable option, making it suitable for heavy pet and traffic areas. While Kikuyu prefers mostly sun, it is not as shade tolerant as Buffalo grass, yet it remains the most installed instant lawn variety in South Australia.

At Designer Paving and Landscaping, we carry out all artificial grass installations and instant lawn installations professionally, using the best quality turfs and materials to ensure the lawn's health and appearance meets the highest standards.
Every step of the process is meticulously managed using the best construction practices, starting with the correct excavation. It's important that the excavation is deep enough to allow for a minimum 100mm topsoil base under the instant turf. If the turf is to be laid level with a pathway, this requires excavation to a depth of 140mm.
If the subgrade consists of compacted clay, gypsum can be added to the top and rotary hoed to a depth of 100mm.
Next, a 100mm deep layer of topsoil is added, compacted moderately, and precisely leveled out with levels and screed bars. Just prior to installation, we apply lawn starter fertilizer and soak the soil thoroughly, allowing for deep watering while removing any trapped air pockets.
Instant turf varieties are then laid tightly to prevent any edges from drying out. Topsoil can also be added to any awkward gaps to keep them moist.
The newly laid lawn is then given a heavy hand watering followed by running a 40-45kg roller over the top. The roller levels out any inconsistencies in height, closes any gaps, removes air pockets, and helps bond the synthetic turf to the soil base.
